Famous Paintings Reviewed is an art history blog that makes art history fun. Unstuffy. Accessible. Not requiring an art history degree or an art background. Just curiosity.

We uncover that hidden history that makes famous paintings memorable, like in this work by Rosa Bonheur.

Rosa Bonheur. The Horse Fair, 1853-55. Oil on canvas, 8' 1/4

Turns out that 1850s women weren’t allowed to enter the (manly) Paris horse market, but Rosa wanted to draw there. She simply disguised herself as a man and went anyway. Years later, it was discovered that she painted herself as one of the jockies in this towering masterpiece.
